This course addresses complex health needs in mental health using the 5 underpinning curriculum domains of biological sciences, evidence based practice (EBP), psycho-social health, professional and ethical values & clinical skills through 6 case studies which focus on: organization and policy relating to mental health services, biological principles of mental health nursing, the nurses’ role in the comprehensive assessment and subsequent care planning, individuals mental health difficulties incorporating the identification of the “at risk” and “vulnerable” individuals, promotion of improved wellbeing through interventions to support recovery and social inclusion, the structure of mental health services and how this impacts the role of contemporary mental health nurses, as well as the development of values that underpin a recovery based approached to practice including working with a person’s strengths to promote positive risk taking.
