This unit introduces the human resource management function. We begin by examining the basic contours of employment in Canadian society. This introduction to the employment relationship sets out the legal and economic frameworks of employment and identifies some areas where the interests of employers and workers can conflict. Subsequently, we examine the major areas of human resource management (HRM) responsibility and its functions, with specific attention to the ways in which employers use HRM to exert control in the workplace. We conclude this unit by introducing the issue of gender in the workplace. Publication date is unknown.
